Charmingly Illustrated Quirky Halloween Humor : In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories
By M Ryan Taylor on Sep 26, 2009 | In Halloween Stories
In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories by Alvin Schwartz and Dirk Zimmer (illustrator) takes seven stories and poems from folklore and adds some charming illustrations. I really loved this little book for young readers. My favorite tales were "The Teeth" and "The Green Ribbon." The later of the two has such a funny (macabre) ending. I also enjoyed the adaption of "There was an old woman." The stories are short, succint and to the point. The illustrations are quirky and fun. It is also less than $4 new (and you can get it even less used), so it won’t break the bank.
The list of stories includes:
- The Teeth
- In the Graveyard
- The Green Ribbon
- In a Dark, Dark Room
- The Night it Rained
- The Pirate
- The Ghost of John
Plus a brief section telling where the stories came from. This is a classic, still in print after twenty-five years.
Happy Halloween!
