Mad

This cartoon of a ‘mad’ scientist (whose beaker does the laughing for him) was one of my high school drawings. Another Halloween icon we all will recognize and the stock of all manner of campy films. Was Frankenstein the first? Maybe . . . it certainly cemented the image. The scene where Dr. Frankenstein proclaims, "It’s alive" is one of those moments frozen in our collective memory.
This guy kind of reminds me of a cross between Frankenstein and Igor. Did you know Igor didn’t make an appearance until after Bride of Frankenstein? and that he was played by Bela Lugosi, the iconic actor who created the Dracula role? I know, I’m a mountain of trivia. ;-)
Happy Halloween!

Even though the Bride is only featured for a few minutes at the end of "Bride of Frankenstein," she has become one of those iconic images that most people will recognize (like the Frankenstein monster itself). My reaction to her in the movie (she never gets completed in the book), is "poor thing, what a way to wake up." You can sympathize with her and the monster’s loneliness. Kind of gut wrenching actually. We’ve all been there, in each of these positions; either the rejected or the rejector. That’s one reason I think that even with the camp, this old film still resonates and similar beauty and the beast fables always will.
I was experimenting with a set of gray to white pencils in this drawing. I used a fine tip black felt pen for details.
Happy Halloween!
