  • At twelve o'clock
    you must be ready,
    And hold your pumpkin
    good and steady,
    For by it's rays
    of candle light
    On Halloween
    all things are bright!

The Daily Monster

This site is incredibly fun, it features Stephen Bucher’s Daily Monster: a series of 200 monsters created from ink blobs. Each monster is created before your eyes on video and some of the drawings are truly hilarious. It is fascinating to watch the progress of each monster from blop of ink to finished creation and you can leave comments about what you think the story of each of these monsters is. Use this link if you want to start at monster number 1 and work your way up from the beginning.

Gravestone Browsing

By admin on Aug 6, 2008 | In Other Worthy Halloween Sites | Send feedback »

O.K., so maybe it is a little strange to go browsing through gravestones, but honestly, I have a good reason. I was doing research for a current art project that I hope to post soon to this site. Besides, some of the designs are so fun and inventive. Really they just don’t make gravestones like they used to. I’ve decided I’ve got to have a winged skull on my own gravestone (it symbolizes the soul leaving the body and flying heavenward). There are all kinds of wonderful symbols. A few to look out for:

  • Winged skull or flying head : soul going toward heaven.
  • Arrow : mortality.
  • Trumpet (with or without angels) : resurrection day (i.e. the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised).
  • Hourglass (with or without wings) : time is fleeting, seize the day.
  • Sunburst : resurrection morning.

There are many more, but that’s a sampling. The artwork varies in quality from simply amazingly detailed to very simple or primitive. It is such a joy to look at. Real eye candy.

The best part is that you don’t have to go to a cemetary to browse. There are some amazing online resources and collections of grave marker photos. My absolute favorite so far is: Farber Gravestone Collection. This is all in black and white, which is the best way to view gravestones anyway. All the markers are pre-1800, so you’re guaranteed all classic carving.

Amazing Collection of Antique Halloween Postcards

By admin on Aug 6, 2008 | In Other Worthy Halloween Sites | Send feedback »

This Flickr collection of Antique Halloween Postcards is simply amazing. Full photos and details numbering over 1300. Many cards here I’ve never seen before in other collections. Honestly, some of these old-time postcards carry some of my favorite Halloween art and have inspired some of my own designs, including Merry Halloween.

Antique halloween postcards are the inspiration for several of my works here. This collection is hard to beat.

This site contains a number of nicely done paintings that feature ghosts, graveyards, night scenes, even a midnight carnival scene.

    • What is it? Checkerboard Fudge Part 1 : Halloween Treat

I have tried many a fudge recipe over my years of cooking, but I've never found one that matches the traditional 'Million Dollar Fudge' recipe that has become a tradition in my family. I have made two new variations on it for this two-part recipe; the first, What is it?, is a penuche (brown sugar) based variation. Everyone in my family seems to love it.

    • Rocky Road Checkerboard Fudge Part 2 : Halloween Treat

This is great stuff, and such an eyecatching thing on an Halloween spread, of course you'll need to make both this and part one to capture the effect. Something I hadn't thought of until now is that you could place little plastic favors, like spider rings on top of the checkerboard tiles to make your playing pieces.

    • Goblin’s Horns for Halloween Morns

Mmm . . . Eggs, mushrooms, sweet peppers and cheese, what more could you want for to gobble up on a Halloween morn.

    • Halloween Reverse Apple Bobbing

Traditional apple-bobbing is a mess. Try this alternative that is just as difficult.

    • Halloween Musical Chairs

Play this the same as regular musical chairs, except use scary (or not so scary) Halloween music.

    • Halloween Candy Corn Toss (Relay Race)

OK, you can toss anything you want, but candy corn does say "Halloween" like nothing else I know.

    • Halloween Mummy Toilet Paper Race

Super simple, but super fun. All you need is a pack of toilet tissue to play this mummy race game.

    • Halloween Story Contest

Hold your own Halloween Story contest. It is easy to do and can be a great addition to your party or other Halloween event. If you have out-of-state family members you know will be absent from the party, this is great activity to include them in on the fun.

  • On this dread night a magic spell
    Broods round about
So if you go out after dark
    Why, just watch out!
